AutoInvest
Designing automated property investing
Automated monthly plans that help Stake investors invest consistently, based on their goals and preferred strategy.

Context
AutoInvest set out to help Stake investors invest consistently through automated monthly plans, based on their goals and preferred strategy. The aim was to make the commitment clear while keeping investors in control.
Initial interviews pointed to four problems:
- Forgetting to invest regularly: remembering to invest created repeated effort.
- Lack of market knowledge: researching individual properties could feel overwhelming.
- Missed opportunities: investors could miss properties when they didn’t act quickly.
- Diversification challenges: building a balanced portfolio required ongoing decisions.
The users I spoke to weren’t sure what to invest in, felt frustrated by missed opportunities, wanted to “set it and forget it” and needed more confidence as international investors.
I was the product designer in Stake’s Extend squad, a cross-functional team focused on new features, market expansion and taking ideas from discovery to delivery, working alongside a product manager, two front-end engineers and a back-end engineer.
Approach
Testing our first ideas
I used rough wireframes and early Figma prototypes to test whether users understood the concept, trusted the automation and could choose a strategy that matched their intent. One concept offered pre-built strategies alongside custom criteria. Custom criteria proved confusing, particularly for international investors, so we left them out of the first release and focused on pre-built strategies.
Prioritising what matters most
We balanced user needs, technical scope and long-term product goals in a phased plan. The MVP covered automatic investment with pre-built strategies, managing AutoInvest, historical transactions, and editing, pausing or resuming a plan. Automatic deposits, automatic dividend reinvestment and customisable criteria were planned for a later version, with portfolio goals after that.
Clarity before commitment
Setup asks for a monthly amount, a theme, a payment method, a start date and a monthly repeat date. Amount presets help people start, a separate calculator explains potential long-term value, and no deposit is taken until the setup is confirmed.
AutoInvest needed to work for different investor mindsets: people who wanted diversification, people chasing growth, people focused on income and people who wanted more control. Themes turned a complex investment decision into a simple choice:
- Diversified: balanced exposure across opportunities.
- Growth-focused: aimed at higher upside.
- Income-focused: prioritising recurring returns.
Scheduled deposits move money into the wallet on the chosen recurring date, and automatic investment then uses wallet funds according to the plan’s rules. Keeping the two separate helps investors understand when funds are deposited and when they are invested.
Keeping investors in control
Before activation, a review screen lets people check every setting and still edit it before they confirm. After setup, the plan shows a clear next deposit date and the current period, and can be paused and resumed. If the wallet balance is too low, investors are prompted to top up before resuming.
Simplifying without removing control
Usability testing surfaced two issues. Participants struggled to understand the differences between themes, and they questioned how much would be decided for them and what they could change later.
“I’m not sure what the difference is between Balanced and Diversified.”
“Can I still manually invest? What’s automatic, I don’t want to lose control.”
I simplified the language and used clearer descriptions focused on real-world outcomes, so each theme was easier to understand. I also made it clear which decisions AutoInvest handles automatically and which settings investors control, with options to pause, resume and edit at any time.

Outcome
AutoInvest created a new behaviour inside Stake: users could commit to a monthly strategy and keep investing without manually choosing every opportunity. Dashboards gave teams visibility of adoption.
