Bringing the PlayStation Store to retail kiosks
A touch-screen kiosk for buying PlayStation games, add-ons and top-ups in store and paying in cash, for customers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Context
Sony approached Synechron to design, develop and install a way to buy PlayStation products on touch-screen kiosks in selected stores in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. I worked on it from June to September 2019.
The brief was to turn purchasing at the point of sale into a modern, visually attractive digital product that stands out from the competition and draws customers in to explore PlayStation games and services.
Who it’s for
The kiosk is mainly for customers who pay in cash. In the UAE and Saudi Arabia, customers under 18 can’t hold a traditional bank account, so they can’t buy from the PlayStation Store on their console.
The kiosk brings PlayStation Store products into shops, where these customers can pay in cash.
Approach
I was involved in designing the whole system end to end, imagining how the existing PlayStation ecosystem could serve people who prefer to buy game add-ons and top-ups with cash.
The goal was to recapture the experience of the store on the console, with a simple idea: choose a game, get your product receipt and pay at the cashier.
UX design
I mapped the journeys and information architecture, then planned the user journeys, wireframed and designed the on-screen navigation, taking into account the average height of the target customers relative to the height of the kiosk.
UI design
I designed the kiosk interface by adapting PlayStation’s style guide, prioritising content and interface elements around what we assumed people wanted to do and where their hands would rest on the touch screen.
Testing
I also took part in internal testing and user testing of the kiosk.
